On the afternoon of September 24th, 2011, our dear friend and neighbor, Roy Glover passed away.  Roy had been with SaddleStrings for twelve years, before he retired from the spotlight.  We were truly blessed to have been touched by his tremendous talents.  There wasn't a guitar or genre he couldn't play, (except maybe Rap).  Western music will miss him deeply.

Roy told us stories about how he got his first gig.  He was 8 yrs. old and played the guitar in his father's band.  His uncle played the bass and his brother played the fiddle.  From then on, he was hooked.  His father knew Bob Wills and they would stop and see Bob, and sometimes step in, when he was playing. Roy learned how to play the blues and jazz while in the Air Force Band, because that was what was popular.  "Texas swing and country music weren't popular in those days," Roy would say.  He also made $175 for one of what Roy would call his "happy licks" when he laid down some music for Juice Newton.  Roy had played with the likes of David Frizzell, Rose Maddox, Jeanie Sealey, Tex Williams and Johnny Horton, to name a few.

Those of us, in the WMA, who were honored to share the stage with him, know the amazing lead work he could do.  Whenever asked, he would be happy to step in and help with another artist's set, even if he just been on stage.  SaddleStrings can't claim him for their own, because he was so much more than that.  There are so many musicians and audience members that he touched.

He loved the music and he loved the stage.  He would skip meals just to be on that stage.  He has now re-joined the family band and is showing off the new lead licks he's created since he last played with them.
Roy's family appreciates the kindness that has been extended to them, during these difficult times that Roy had been ill, and continues to thank everyone for their prayers and thoughts.

Feel free to share stories and condolences with the family at saddlestrings@earthlink.net
